AMERICA/NICARAGUA - "Corruption and fanaticism": Mgr. Baez invites to give light and soul to society

Managua (Agenzia Fides) - "There is a lot of corruption. There are many lies, there is selfishness and a lot of greed for money and power, and this creates injustice and increases the number of poor people", said His Exc. Mgr. José Silvio Baez in his homily last Sunday in Managua.
"There are positive things in the country, but we are not satisfied with how the country moves forward", said Auxiliary Bishop of Managua commenting on the Gospel where Jesus gives sight to a blind man. Mgr. Baez reiterated that we are all members of society, therefore "we have to restore sight to society, restore soul to society, because our society seems to live without a soul, without sight, without the mind, because, as we can all see, irrational acts abound".
He then added that "poverty is the result of this blindness, as well as political or religious fanaticism".
The Bishop recalled that Nicaragua is still shocked by what happened a month ago when in an evangelical church a 25-year-old woman was burned to death because was considered possessed. She died four days later, when she was finally taken to hospital. The police are still investigating and some leaders of the evangelical community were arrested. A fact like this had never happened.
Mgr. Baez concluded his homily recalling that "we Christians are called to be light in the world, like Jesus, to take away the blindness that leads us to a dead end. Have you seen how much crime, how much religious fanaticism there is? There is no light in Nicaragua". (CE) (Agenzia Fides 28/03/2017)
