AMERICA/MEXICO - Mgr. Arizmendi: "Lay down weapons once and for all"

Tuesday, 21 March 2017

San Cristobal de Las Casas (Agenzia Fides) - After Mass on Sunday, March 19, the Bishop of San Cristobal de Las Casas, His Exc. Mgr. Felipe Arizmendi Esquivel, called for a definitive solution to the conflict in the area. Although there is apparent calm in the municipality of Chenalhó (Chiapas), the area continues to live a climate of insecurity, and lessons at schools have been suspended (see Fides 06/03/2017), which is why Mgr. Arizmendi Esquivel reiterated the need to find a solution, but still asked to lay down weapons: "you can bury or destroy them, but they must disappear, because you cannot continue to kill people like that". "It is a situation that concerns us all, we know that weapons are there, are hidden, we cannot continue to see so much blood", said the Bishop. Last week, the catechists of San Pedro Chenalhó parish warned the Bishop of existing divisions in the area. "We cannot live like this - said Mgr. Arizmendi -, community against community, neighborhood against neighborhood, it is time to think to live in peace". (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 21/03/2017)
