Kinshasa (Agenzia Fides) - Talks between the majority and the opposition regarding the implementation of the San Silvestro agreements resume today, 16 March, in order to give the DRC a national unity government that will lead the Country to presidential elections by 2017.
The talks had been suspended pending the funeral of opposition Union leader Etienne Tshisekedi's, who died in Brussels on 1 February (see Fides 02/02/2017). Due to political reasons the funeral has not yet been celebrated. "We wanted to wait for the funeral of the President of the Union. But since this seems impossible, a meeting was convened, taking into account the urgency and impatience of the population", said to Radio Okapi don Donatien Nshole, spokesman of CENCO, the Congolese Bishops' Conference in charge of mediating in the talks. Don Nshole believes that Etienne Tshisekedi’s son, Félix Tshisekedi, should be the leader of the Union of the opposition which is divided internally. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 16/03/2017)
