Guayaquil (Agenzia Fides) - "It is not enough to win the elections, it is important to know how to rule. This requires certain attitudes such as closeness, listening and service, regardless of our political or religious position", warned His Exc. Mgr. Luis Cabrera Herrera, OFM, Archbishop of Guayaquil, in an open letter to the candidates on the ballot for the presidential elections to be held on April 2.
In the letter, sent to Fides, Mgr. Cabrera Herrera invites candidates to respect and dialogue during the election campaign that starts tomorrow, 10 March.
"Closeness makes sharing possible for authorities with our people, particularly the most vulnerable. Listening allows us to discover how people live, want and expect; and not exactly just what we like to hear. Service is the guiding principle of every project and social, political or economic program", explains the Archbishop underlining that when you consider power as a service it prevents the manipulation of the poor. "The excluded are not objects, but subjects and protagonists of their own history. This belief requires recognition, respect and promotion", concludes Mgr. Cabrera Herrera.
The candidate Lenín Moreno of the Alianza País party, won the first round of the elections (38.8%). Not having reached 40 percent, he will go to the ballot on April 2 with candidate Guillermo Lasso of the center-right "Movimiento Creo" party.
Moreno is supported by President Correa and Lasso, former banker and former economy minister, obtains more supporters with the proposal made to all opposition leaders to create a table for Ecuador's governability. The first to accept was the social-Christian candidate, Cynthia Viteri, who arrived third in the results. Viteri said she will support Lasso in the second round. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 09/03/2017)
