Yangon (Agenzia Fides) - Thirteen organizations engaged in the defense of human rights have urged the United Nations to investigate the atrocities committed by the Burmese army against the Muslim minority Rohingya. "The establishment of a commission under the mandate of the United Nations or a similar mechanism is the minimum to ensure justice" say the organizations in a letter to the Human Rights Commission of the United Nations in Geneva. The signatories, including Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, have also asked to prevent the violence against the minorities who are in danger. The Special Rapporteur of the United Nations human rights in Myanmar has warned of the bad situation that the Rohingya population is facing in refugee camps in Bangladesh and called for urgent measures after visiting the area. Meanwhile, the deputy director of HRW in Asia, supported the appeal and denounced the silence maintained by the international community to what is happening in the Asian Country.
In Myanmar there is a long history of discrimination and persecution against Muslims, and the Rohingya are illegal immigrants. However, the international community and human rights groups ensure that this Muslim minority has historical roots in the Burmese territory. At least 73,000 Rohingyas fled to Bangladesh from the brutality of the Burmese military who, according to several organizations, committed all kinds of abuses against this minority.
