Nairobi (Agenzia Fides) - "Tribalism and corruption undermine the peace and stability of the Kenyan nation", warned His Exc. Mgr. Cornelius Korir, Bishop of Eldoret and President of the Bishops' Commission for Justice and Peace", at the start of Lenten campaign, which will focus on the preparation of the general elections to be held in August (see Fides 25/02/2017).
Speaking to the faithful gathered in the University of Nairobi Graduation square, Mgr. Korir recalled the exhortation that Pope Francis had addressed during his visit to Kenya in November 2015 (see Fides 24/11/2015), to avoid tribalism because this can destroy a Country if its population is unable to overcome it in order to build an integrated and cohesive nation.
"Similarly we still remember the Pope’s strong words on corruption and how if nothing is done urgently to stop this cancer it will kill the moral fiber of our nation", added the Bishop of Eldoret.
"Corruption - said Mgr. Korir – and stealing of public resources is strangling any meaningful development in the country right from the counties to the national level adding that, it is very sad to see the millions of Kenyans wallowing in abject poverty while some very few people are amassing wealth and enjoying themselves as if the poor do not exist" .
Among these there are many unemployed young people who are likely to be seduced by the sirens of radicalization and violence.
The President of the Justice and Peace Commission indicated in the Gospel message of the Beatitudes the way out form individual and collective selfishness, in order to build a more equitable and peaceful Country. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 03/03/2017)
