AMERICA/COLOMBIA - Clear signs of peace by ELN: the request of the Bishop of Arauca

Monday, 27 February 2017

Arauca (Agenzia Fides) - The Bishop of the Diocese of Arauca calls for clear signs of peace from ELN (National Liberation Army) in this particular moment: last week, this guerrilla group attacked police stations and stole public transport buses.
His Exc. Mgr. Jaime Muñoz Pedroza, Bishop of Arauca, who is part of the group of Bishops who work as facilitators in the dialogue process between the government and the guerrillas of ELN, has warned that such actions take away a lot of credibility to the initiatives of peace that the country wants.
The request of the Bishop of Arauca is very clear: the definitive cease-fire should not be done at the end of the dialogue process, but at the beginning of negotiations.
Mgr. Jaime Muñoz Pedroza belongs to the group chosen by the Episcopal Conference of Colombia (CEC) to follow the peace talks between government and ELN, since right from the very beginning ELN had asked the accompaniment of the Church (see Fides 25/10/2016). The Diocese of Arauca, along with others, has been the scene of many episodes by ELN guerrillas for a long time. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 27/02/2017)
