AFRICA/BURUNDI - Kira Mama Plus! A new maternity ward in Cibitoke

Cibitoke (Agenzia Fides) - Mothers and children in Cibitoke, in the north of Burundi, will soon have a new neonatal ward. The Medical Cooperation Committee will provide the district hospital an essential tool to reduce infant mortality in the country. The project Kira Mama Plus! aims to reduce infant mortality through the training of nurses and midwives in all maternity facilities in the district.
The partners are the hospital in Mabayi, 16 health centers and the the Hospital of Cibitoke health district. 257 health professionals will benefit from the project.
In Burundi, the neonatal mortality rate is still very high, according to UNICEF 36 children out of 1000 die in the first 28 days of life, especially in the first hours after birth, because are premature, underweight or because of complications during birth or infection.
