Nairobi (Agenzia Fides) – Encourage youth to use social media positively and responsibly to preach and maintain peace as the Country moves towards the general elections slated for 8th, August, 2017. This is the purpose of the meeting held at the Paulines Publication’s African offices in Nairobi, which was attended by 200 secondary school students. "Youth can become violent and become those who victimize other people depending on what they see others doing on social media. Many a times politicians use hate speeches and they might think it is right and make it normal", said Sister Josephine Idowu, of the Daughters of St. Paul, who led the meeting.
The religious stressed that social media may instead be used in a positive way to the benefit of evangelization. "Social media has a lot of influence and can inform the young people, it can improve on what you know, enrich interaction, improve self-esteem and can be used for prayers", said Sister Idowu.
In Kenya, the Daughters of St Paul’s congregation have embarked on a three month vigorous civic education for the youth who are the mostly targeted group by the politicians to perpetuate violence.
The activities include: publication of books, production of audio-visual materials and talks by professional and religious leaders in schools with media professionals and religious leaders. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 17/02/2017)
