AMERICA/NICARAGUA - Meeting of Bishops on the situation of the country: the rights of farmers are not respected

Managua (Agenzia Fides) - The Episcopal Conference of Nicaragua (CEN) will meet in Assembly on Monday, February 20, to evaluate and reflect on its program for the year 2017. About a year ago (see Fides 14/03/2016) the Bishops of CEN had prepared a pastoral letter on the institutional situation of the country and the electoral process, taking up the main issues raised in the letter entitled "In search of new horizons for a better Nicaragua" (see Fides 20/5/2014; 22/05/2014; 04/06/2014) prepared in 2014 and delivered to President Ortega.
The themes were: family situation, social issues, the situation of human rights, the problems of the Caribbean coast, evangelization, some government policies and the crisis of national institutions.
According to information received from a local source of Fides, after the elections won by Ortega, and after the report on the election observation of the Organization of American States that did not consider the contribution offered by the Church (see Fides 06/02/2017), the Bishops now wish to propose a reflection in the light of recent events that continue to shake national opinion:
the continuing demonstrations by farmers to defend their land from the trans-oceanic channel project, the European Union statement that yesterday, February 16, denounced the lack of protection for human rights defenders in Nicaragua, requiring to respect international commitments on the rights of Indigenous Peoples also signed by Nicaragua in 2008.
