Juba (Agenzia Fides) - "We demand justice for Sister Veronica Rackova" said His Exc. Mgr. Erkolano Lodu Tombe, Bishop of Yei, in southern Sudan, wondering why the government in Juba is remaining silent with regards to the responsibilities of the killing of the nun.
On May 16, 2016 Sister Veronica Rackova, a Slovak nun of the Holy Spirit Missionary Sisters (SSP) and Director of St Bakhita's Medical Centre in Yei, was seriously injured at a checkpoint controlled by the armed forces of South Sudan (SPLA). Sister Veronica passed away on May 20 at Nairobi Hospital in Kenya, where she had been taken (see Fides 21/05/2016).
The investigation into the death of the nun is blocked and now the Bishop of Yei, on behalf of family members, is asking why the authorities are remaining silent, even though some arrests had been reported at the beginning. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 10/02/2017)
