Pittsburgh (Agenzia Fides) - Dozens of children lined the main aisle of St. Paul's Cathedral in Oakland-Pittsburgh, wearing the native dress of Latin America and holding up flags of their countries, accompanied by the sound of the trumpets of a band of Mariachi and opened the procession before the evening Mass on Monday 12 December, carrying a large arras of the Virgin of Guadalupe.
This is how the Cathedral of the Diocese of Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania) celebrated the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, remembering the apparition of the Virgin Mary, in the sixteenth century near the present Mexico City. During the Mass celebration, the Bishop of Pittsburgh, His Exc. Mgr. David Allen Zubik, spoke of the anxiety that the Latino population lives. "The Church in the United States has always opened its doors to our immigrants", he said in his homily in Spanish Mgr. Zubik, who descends from Polish and Slovak immigrants. "I am here only because our Church and our country welcomed my grandparents many years ago", he said.
Many immigrants expressed their concerns for what elected President Donald Trump said regarding immigrants without legal status, fearing measures that could separate parents from their children born in America, and uproot many people who have lived and worked here for many years. "I know that many of you are worried about your future - said the Bishop - but you have to be certain that the Church of Pittsburgh and I as your Bishop will support you".
Mgr. Zubik on several occasions expressed himself in favor of an immigration reform.
Just a few days ago the Conference of US Catholic Bishops asked Catholics to highlight the plight of migrants and refugees on the day of the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 13/12/2016)
