Managua (Agenzia Fides) - Police warded off hundreds of peasants with rubber bullets and gas, who from the south of Nicaragua were trying to reach the capital last night to attend a demonstration of the opposition with regards to the construction of the inter-oceanic canal. This is what the leaders of peasant movements reported. "Many were injured", said to journalists without specifying the number, lawyer Monica Lopez, head of the foundation Popol Nah, that supports the struggle of the peasants who would be evicted from their lands for the construction of the canal.
Mgr. Silvio Baez, Auxiliary Bishop of Managua, in a message sent to Fides calls on "freedom for the peasants’ demonstration" and also attaches the message of the peasant leader, Francisca Ramirez who recalls Article 54 of the constitution on the right to mobilization.
The protesters arrived in a convoy of trucks from New Guinea, about 300 km southeast of Managua. New Guinea is a mountain area in the center of the country, where the 278 km inter-oceanic canal should pass, the construction of which the government has entrusted to the Chinese company HKND.
