Maputo (Agenzia Fides) - The political and military crisis has turned into a latent conflict. There are 5,000 internally displaced people in central Mozambique because of the political and military conflict between the RANAMO and the government of FRELIMO. To these are added the 2,500 refugees in neighboring Malawi, according to the latest figures of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
RENAMO (Mozambican National Resistance) is the former guerrilla movement that fought in the 1976-1992 civil war. After the peace agreements of Rome (1992) Renamo became an opposition party, but took up arms in 2013 to challenge FRELIMO (Liberation Front of Mozambique) which has been in power since independence in 1975 .
The rebels commit attacks on major streets and sometimes in villages, especially in the center of the Country, and accuse the army of wanting to assassinate their leader, Afonso Dhlakama, who has been hiding in his stronghold on the Gorongosa mountains since October 2015.
