AFRICA/DR CONGO - The US government supports the mediation of the Congolese Bishops

Wednesday, 23 November 2016 bishops   elections

Kinshasa (Agenzia Fides) - "We underscore our support for the discussions facilitated by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference (CENCO) between the political opposition and the Government of the DRC to reach a consensus path towards credible, timely elections", said a statement from the State Department in which Washington's support for the mediation efforts of the Congolese Catholic Bishops is reiterated (see Fides 18/11/2016)
"We urge the DRC Government and the opposition to work with CENCO to address remaining concerns, including a timeline for presidential elections in 2017, guarantees that President Kabila will not seek another term and the Constitution will not be changed to enable one, increased independence of the national electoral commission (CENI) leadership, an inclusive transitional government, and a strong independent oversight committee".
The US government invited the main opposition leader and candidate of "Le Rassemblement" "to offer constructive and practical proposals and refrain from inflammatory rhetoric or actions inconsistent with democratic norms".
Finally, it hopes that the appointment of new Prime Minister, Samy Badibanga, can become "an opportunity to build trust and confidence among all stakeholders" and "fulfill its responsibility to respect and protect the fundamental rights of all Congolese citizens, including the freedoms of speech and assembly and the right to access information".
