AFRICA/GHANA - The Chief of Staff: "We are ready to protect peace in view of elections"

Accra (Agenzia Fides) - "It is my responsibility to help the police protect peace and properties. We are ready to deal with any person or group of persons who will disrupt the peace enjoyed by Ghanaians", said the Chief of Defence Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces, (CDS), Air Marshall Michael Samson-Oje, during the courtesy call by the Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra, Most Rev. Charles G. Palmer-Buckle.
In view of the elections to be held on 7 December, political tension is on the rise in Ghana. A fact that has been cirticized by the Chief of Staff. "Ghana has conducted six successive elections since 1992 and I do not see why some persons or group of persons are chanting war songs where there is no war song to be sung", he said, and then asked the church to pray for him and his men.
Mgr. Palmer-Buckle expressed his gratitude to the soldiers for their work and said that, as priests, "it is our duty as priests to pray for the country and its citizens". The Archbishop called on politicians not to follow "self-acclaimed prophets" who go about giving false prophecies, on election predictions.
Mgr. Palmer-Buckle finally called on the Chief of Staff to reconsider the reduction of the rank of priests serving in the Armed Forces from Captain to Lieutenant since they undergo a long period of education like their counterparts doctors and lawyers.
Ghana goes to the polls come 7th December 2016 with seven candidates competing for the presidency. Recently (see Fides 21/10/2016), the Bishops have denounced the heavy electoral tension, urging Ghanaians to avoid any form of violence. (AA/LM) (Agenzia Fides 22/11/2016)
