AFRICA/DR CONGO - The civil society of North Kivu to the UN: "Strengthen the Blue Helmets to do away with the armed groups"

Kinshasa (Agenzia Fides) - An attack on the Indian Blue Helmets of the UN Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) resulted in the death of a 7-year-old and the injury of 34 people.
The explosion of a handmade explosive device, made from nails and bolts, took place on 8 November in Goma, capital of North Kivu in the east of the DRC.
Among the injured there are two civilians and 32 Indian militaries, five of whom are in serious condition.
In a statement sent to Agenzia Fides CEPADHO, a local NGO for the defense of human rights, stresses the similarities between the attack in Goma and those perpetrated in the city of Beni in early 2014, when the ADF (a guerrillas group of Ugandan origin that has settled in the North Kivu) terrorized the population by exploding handmade bombs.
CEPADHO turns to the delegation of the UN Security Council, on a visit to North Kivu, stating that "the province of North Kivu, as the whole region of the Great Lakes, will be in the grip of terror until the UN decides to support with force the DRC to get rid of groups like the ADF, the FDLR (group of Rwandan origin) and their allies".
CEPADHO asks the UN delegation to push the Security Council to add other brigades of emergency response to the one already deployed in North Kivu. This unit is responsible for supporting MONUSCO in high-intensity operations against guerrilla groups in the area. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 10/11/2016)
