Guatemala (Agenzia Fides) - In a statement titled "God loves righteousness and justice" (Ps. 33), the Bishops of Guatemala denounce an "institutional paralysis" that manifests itself in different ways, such as obstruction among MPs and actions that stop the regular course of justice, while justice should be "fast, impartial and foreign to external forces", said the statement sent to Fides.
The document recalls the need to strengthen democracy in difficult moments, this is why the Bishops propose again what was written in June 2015, when they released a document on the need for democracy in the defense of the common good and the promotion of human dignity: "The first principle of a sovereign people is to not to submit to external pressure or accept conditions for the country".
"The fight against corruption is crucial, but it is necessary to situate it in the immediate objectives for building a national project" underline the Bishops. "The socio-political situation we are experiencing is worrying and touches all Guatemalans. We want a different Guatemala and we are doing all we can so that the truth of the Gospel may be our greatest contribution to the social and ethical change that the country needs", concluded the text, signed by the President of the Episcopal Conference, His Exc. Mgr. Rodolfo Valenzuela Núñez, Bishop of Vera Paz.
Last month, the Guatemalans were shocked by the implications of the trial against a former minister and 10 other people involved in a case of high-level corruption. According to the local press, there were also other cases of corruption at the customs, among politicians and bank executives. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 10/11/2016)
