AFRICA/KENYA - Bishop of Embu: "No to political propaganda from the pulpits and no to vote-buying"

Nairobi (Agenzia Fides) - No to political propaganda from the pulpits of the churches. This was stated by His Exc. Mgr. Paul Njiru Kariuki, Bishop of Embu, Kenya, in a pastoral exhortation sent to the priests and faithful of the diocese, in view of general elections on 8 August 2017.
"In the event that the politicians seek to contribute in fundraising, they will only be allowed to do so as church members without expecting to be given a chance to campaign", reads the exhortation. Politicians are barred from using other church facilities for election campaign, and it is also forbidden to make political speeches during funerals.
"No priest is supposed to be publicly affiliated to any political party, or a campaign for a politician or particular political party", warns the exhortation.
Mgr. Kariuki also appealed to the faithful in the diocese to stop accepting handouts from politicians and instead study their manifestos in order to make informed decisions.
Although there are still several months to the general elections, the election campaign has already begun. Religious leaders have intervened on several occasions to denounce the political propaganda that incites hatred (see Fides 15/06/2016). (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 09/11/2016)
