AFRICA/TOGO - S. Egidio Community hosts meeting of Togo Government and opposition delegates in Rome

Rome (Fides Service)- At the invitation of the Rome based S. Egidio Community and following a meeting on 21 July between the President of Togo Faure Gnassingbe and the national leader of the Union of Forces for Change Gilchrist Olympio, on the 7, 8 and 9 November delegates of the Togolese government and the UCF met at the S. Egidio community Centre in Rome according to a S. Egidio report sent to Fides.
“Happy for the constructive spirit of the talks” the report said “the delegations reach an agreement on the order of the day: evaluate implementation of recommendations issued at the end of the July 21 meeting; public security ; army reform; institutional reforms”.
After talks on these themes and after starting work to elaborate consensual positions the parties agreed to meet again soon in Rome to continue efforts to reach and agreement.
The delegations thanks S. Egidio Community for its commitment and ask it to continue to work for the positive outcome of this process.
S. Egidio will continue efforts to mediate with the parties to continue talks and will invite the delegations to Rome to reached a definitive agreement. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 10/11/2005 righe 23 parole 248)
