Mumbai (Agenzia Fides) - "The hospital that takes care of the terminally ill and cancer patients is a monument to mercy": this is what Cardinal Oswald Gracias, Archbishop of Mumbai said during his visit to the "Shanti Avedna Sadan" in Mumbai , the first cost-free hospice in India where, irrespective of caste, community or creed, patients with advanced cancer and terminally ill are taken care of, favoring the poor and the marginalized.
As Fides learns, visiting the sick is one of the last acts of the Jubilee of Mercy carried out by the Cardinal. Last weekend Cardinal Gracias made a personal pilgrimage, passing through the Holy Door in the Basilica of Our Lady of Mount, in Bandra, Mumbai. He later made two significant works of mercy: he visited the sick at "Shanti Avedna Sadan", to mark the 30th anniversary of the founding of the hospital, and then celebrated a Mass for the tribals who immigrated in Mumbai.
In this special Jubilee of tribals, he invited Cardinal Telesphore Toppo, from one of the tribal people, to preside over the Eucharist and to participate in the huge gathering of tribals who came from states like Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Orissa and West Bengal. Cardinal Gracias promised that the Archdiocese of Mumbai will develop suitable pastoral programs to take care of these people, engaged in menial jobs and often victims of exploitation and abuse.
