Lilongwe (Agenzia Fides) - "November 3 will become a benchmark for the 21 villages and the 10,000 people living in the mountain who as from today will have the possibility of health care assistance at home, able to defeat the illness with which they had always been used to living", writes Fr. Piergiorgio Gamba, Monfortan missionary, who attended the inauguration of the hospital in the mountains of Chaone, Malawi, created thanks to the efforts of the associations "Friends of the hospital of Chaone".
The opening ceremony was presided by His Exc. Mgr. Alessandro Pagani, Bishop of Mangochi", said Fr. Gamba.
The Christian community of the mountain is about to reach the milestone of one hundred baptized in a population of 10,000 Muslims. "Malawi has never experienced religious conflict and a reason is given by the marriages between people of different religions that has created a sense of unity that goes beyond differences" said Fr. Gamba.
For a week, the hospital will offer its service for free, and before the sun rose, the whole hospital was flooded with large numbers of people: children and adults, who remained hidden in the villages for the inability of being transported downstream where they could find a hospital.
"It will take months - repeated the nurse on duty - before cleaning Chaone of many hidden diseases that primarily affect the poor and physically weak. Scabies, sprains, wounds, diseases were never treated due to malnutrition and related also to the lack of vaccinations". (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 08/11/2016)
