ASIA/CHINA - In Beijing a seminar on ‘Catholic Social Doctrine and Modern Society’ highlights contribution of Christianity to present day Chinese society

Beijing (Fides Service) - ‘Catholic Social Doctrine and Modern Society’ is the theme of a seminar organised by the Beijing Institute for the Study of Catholicism and Culture to be held in Beijing 5 to 7 December. A statement of presentation says the seminar aims to promote knowledge of the Social Doctrine of the Catholic Church in both the academic and social environment. Director of the Institute Fr Peter Zhao, said it also aims to highlight the contribution Christianity offers to modern Chinese society. Themes presented will include the basics of the Social Doctrine of the Catholic Church; application of the Social Doctrine of the Catholic Church in modern society; focal points of Church attention in society: justice and equity, modern poverty, general wellbeing, equal rights and human dignity, environment protection etc; possible contribution of Christianity in modern Chinese society; characteristics and evolution of modern Chinese society.
The Beijing Institute for the Study of Catholicism and Culture was opened in 2002, by Fr Peter Zhao, who studied Canon Law at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven di Belgio. The goal of the Institute is to study religious culture promoting more harmony among Catholicism and traditional Chinese culture with meetings, seminars and publication of material on religious matters. The Institute has various international collaborators. Previous seminars have included “Catholicism and Ethics” in 2003, and the first two volumes of “Journal of Catholic Studies”.
