Luanda (Agenzia Fides) - The instability in the Great Lakes Region is a threat to all States of the region underlined the Vice President of Kenya, William Ruto, during the summit which opened on October 26, in Luanda (Angola), attended by the Heads of State of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (CIRGL) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
Ruto stressed that the various armed groups in the region are likely to attract the attention of international terrorist organizations, eager to expand their area of operations: "In the age of ever-rising terrorism, the region should guard against such groups by global terror networks to perpetuate their hate agenda".
"There is therefore an urgent need to decisively deal with such units to achieve and protect peace and stability in the region", said Ruto.
Among the groups present in the area, at least one, the ADF (Allied Democratic Forces), seems to have relations with international terrorist organizations (see Fides 05/11/2015).
The Vice President of Kenya therefore concluded that "there is need to deal with negative forces in the DRC if sustainable peace in the Great Lakes is to be achieved. We can draw lessons and best practices from each other as we strive to strengthen our democratic institutions and governance systems". (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 27/10/2016)
