AMERICA/COLOMBIA - Investigations underway for the death of a 91-year-old priest

Rionegro (Agenzia Fides) - The authorities of the municipality of Rionegro (Antioquia, Colombia) are investigating the death of the 91-year-old missionary, Jose Fortunato Bedoya Franco, which happened in circumstances yet to be verified, yesterday afternoon, Tuesday, October 25, in Rionegro .
According to a first report, as informs the note sent to Fides, Colonel Luis Fernando Muñoz, police commander, said that the religious was found on a public road, and was taken to hospital in San Juan de Dios. "He showed no visible signs of violence. After we were informed of the death of this person, but we were not told the cause of his death", added Colonel Muñoz.
According to the testimonies of passers-by, the missionary had been attacked in the street by a person with a syringe in his hand, probably during a robbery attempt.
According to data from the Diocese of Sonsón y Rionegro, Fr. José Fortunato, was born on October 13, 1925 in Santo Domingo (Antioquia), he was ordained a priest on June 29, 1952 in the Diocese of Santa Rosa de Osos, in the north of Antioquia. He belonged to the Misioneros Javerianos de Yarumal.
