AFRICA/MALAWI - The President returns from America, but there remain doubts about his health

Lilongwe (Agenzia Fides) - "After so many broken promises on the return of the President, Sunday’s promise, October 16 was fulfilled", writes Fr. Piergiorgio Gamba from Malawi, where President Arthur Peter Mutharika finally returned to his homeland, who since the end of September had no longer appeared in public, ever since he had gone to New York to attend the UN General Assembly (see Fides 14/10/2016). "At the international airport of Lilongwe, loyalists of the Democratic Progressive Party Party – DPP gathered" says the missionary.
"First a jet of the US Air Force arrived with some passengers who were escorted to the presidential palace - perhaps the medical staff -. Then a plane chartered by Qatar Airlines carrying the President. Everything was in order. The only false note was the President’s left arm raised. The President could not move his right arm".
There are concerns about the 76-year-old President’s health conditions, writes Fr. Gamba, "people are beginning to believe that the President is a puppet in the hands of party made up of corrupt and incapable people".
And this is dramatic in a Country where there is no electricity for 20 hours a day. "It is a Country where small factories are closing, devaluation exceeds 25% and there is hunger", concludes the missionary. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 18/10/2016)
