Mexico City (Agenzia Fides) - The National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) has proposed to the legal and legislative management important changes to ensure the right to equality regarding rural women and eliminate practices that encourage gender discrimination. On the occasion of the International Day of Rural Women, the CNDH has appealed to society and to the authorities to promote the empowerment of women, and should promote economic growth, especially for the 12 million who live or work in the rural areas of the Country. In a statement sent to Fides, the body has proposed, in total compliance with international legal framework, the creation of an appropriate environment to improve the situation of rural women that includes respect for human rights and the perspective in politics and development programs. Health, education, food, access to credit, are the priorities requested. Women account for 20% of the agricultural labor force in Latin American countries, 43% in those in the developing world, and are the key to sustainable development. Women farmers control less land than men as well as having very limited access to seed, investment, credit. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 17/10/2016)
