AFRICA/MALAWI - "Where is the President?" ask the citizens of Malawi

Friday, 14 October 2016 politics

Lilongwe (Agenzia Fides) - #BringbackMutharika, is the hashtag created by users of social media in Malawi to ask where their President is, Arthur Peter Mutharika. The President had left for New York to attend the UN General Assembly at the UN headquarters, which ended on September.26. Since then the Head of State has never appeared in public and it even seems he has not returned to Malawi.
In front of the mounting criticism for lack of transparency, the Presidency's office announced that Mutharika will return to Malawi on October 16. The same Office, however, had already announced the return of the President for last Sunday, October 10. Concerns about Mutharika's health conditions, who is 76 years old, have not dissipated, fueling uncertainty on the political leadership of a Country that is going through a very serious food crisis (see Fides 23/08/2016).
Mutharika’s elder brother, Bingu wa Mutharika, who was also President, died in 2012. Citizens learned of his death only when his Vice President, Joyce Banda, swore to become Head of State. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 14/10/2016)
