Bangui (Agenzia Fides) - At least 30 people have died in the attack against the camp of displaced people in the Bishopric of Kaga Bandoro, in the central area of the Central African Republic. The attack dates back to 12 October and was committed by former Seleka militiamen. An initial assessment of the local Caritas spoke of 9 dead, but later the figure increased. In addition to the dead, hospital sources give an account of 47 injured of whom 9 were transferred to the structures in the capital, Bangui, due to their critical condition.
Good part of the Bishopric IDP camp was set on fire, as well as several homes of the neighborhoods near Kaga Bandoro cathedral. Even government buildings and some NGOs were looted.
The violence erupted after the killing of a former Seleka who along with three of his companions was trying to steal a generator from a local radio station. "Despite the deployment of the French mission Sangaris and 12,000 UN peacekeepers of the UN Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA), in all these months measures have not been taken to disarm the various groups", says a local source to Agenzia Fides who requested anonymity. "We know that former Seleka are re-organizing themselves in the north of the country and the worst is feared". (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 14/10/2016)
