AMERICA/UNITED STATES - The case of the young Mexican boy killed at the border by a US guard reopens

El Paso (Agenzia Fides) - The "Border Network for Human Rights" welcomes the news that the US Supreme Court will review the "Hernandez v. Mesa" case, on the death of Sergio Adrian Hernandez Guereca, a 15-year-old Mexican boy, killed in 2010 by a US border guard while he was on Mexican land.
"This is a crucial case to assert the rights of border residents, both in Mexico and in the United States, regarding the military presence of the US border forces in our communities. All people in border areas have a fundamental human dignity and rights that have to be respected. We are confident that the Supreme Court will set a precedent to ensure that individuals and institutions protect the rights of border residents and are responsible for any omissions offences", reads the note sent to Fides.
The fatal accident occurred in June 2010 between El Paso, Texas, and Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, the US guard claimed he fired in self-defense, as a group of people, from the Mexican side, started throwing stones. The fact, condemned by the Mexican government, provoked many protests but remained unsolved. The court in New Orleans in April 2015 had rejected the request of the Hernandez’ family, who asked for a sentence for abuse of power. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 14/10/2016)
