ASIA/PAKISTAN - Christians and Muslims in the context of the Indian subcontinent share witness to God’s primacy: seminar 10 - 15 December Lahore

Tuesday, 8 November 2005

Lahore (Fides Service) - ‘Christians and Muslims: common witness of God’s primacy in the context of the Indian subcontinent’, is the theme of a seminary to be held in Lahore 10 - 15 December. The aim is to foster constructive relations and cooperation among Christian and Muslim communities in the sub-continent’s five countries. The seminar is organised by Indian Bishops’ Commission for inter-religious dialogue in collaboration with the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Inter-religious Dialogue.
Religious and civil leaders from Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka will attend. The organisers say the seminar will be an opportunity not only for dialogue between different religious communities but also between different nations.
In recent years Catholics and other Christians in Pakistan have intensified efforts to foster dialogue with the Muslim majority. The path of respect and love for every human person, promotion of solidarity and the good of all humanity, prayer and listening to one another is still the best towards achieving harmony and good relations among followers of different faiths.
Today when episodes of violence and intolerance are ever more frequent, highlighting common spiritual perspective of life can help bring closer people of different faiths separated by fundamentalist doctrines empty of the values of respect, tolerance and acceptance of people who are different.
Despite the difficulties in Pakistan Christian and Muslim activists organise various events to promote dialogue, tolerance and peace, especially on the occasion of public holidays like UN World Peace Day, or Id al Fitre feast at the end of Ramadan or Christmas. Moreover to face the tragedy of the recent devastating earthquake in the Kashmir region, Christians and Muslims joined in solidarity to assist victims and help all those in need, irrespective of culture, race or religion.
