Islamabad (Agenzia Fides) - The hearing before the Supreme Court of Pakistan for the case of Asia Bibi has been postponed. The Christian woman sentenced to death for blasphemy in first degree (in 2009) and on appeal (in 2014) was waiting for the hearing scheduled for this morning, October 13, in front of the Criminal Division of the Court in Islamabad. As Fides learns, when it was the turn of the case "Asia Bibi against the state", one of the three members of the bench of judges of that section refused to be part of the bench. "The Registry of the Court therefore ordered a postponement: we will wait in the coming days for the date of the next hearing", said to Fides Asia Bibi’s lawyer, the Muslim Saiful Malook.
"It was an unexpected postponement", Joseph Nadeem tells Fides, the woman's family tutor, present at the Court together with Asia’s husband, Ashiq Masih. "We do not know the reasons for this gesture. It is an unexpected obstacle: we were hoping for a quick resolution of the case. We will wait but still not lose hope", he notes. "We trust in God and in justice", he concludes.
