Madrid (Agenzia Fides) - Since Hurricane Matthew has destroyed much of the island of Haiti, throwing into chaos and horror a population that is still trying to recover from the consequences of the 2010 earthquake, the Spanish Catholic NGO Manos Unidas is continuing to work with local partners in the Caribbean Country to study and decide the strategies to deal with this emergency. It is a country that lives in a permanent state of emergency where the NGO has worked for almost 40 years. "These days we are studying the requests for emergency medical aid of some health centers located in the department adjacent to the affected area which has already welcomed the displaced", said the person in charge of the projects of the NGO in Haiti. "We are particularly concerned about the loss of crops and productive infrastructure, which could lead to a severe food crisis in coming months", he adds. Haiti is totally dependent on humanitarian aid. In the last year drought has been frequent and the health system is on the verge of collapsing. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 12/10/2016)
