Mérida (Agenzia Fides) - The Archbishop of Mérida, His Exc. Mgr. Baltazar Enrique Porras Cardozo, is one of the 17 new cardinals appointed by Pope Francis on 9 October. "Union Radio" has sent Fides a first comment of Mgr. Porras Cardozo: "This appointment demonstrates the concern of Pope Francis for our continent and for our country, and even the will to cooperate to overcome this serious crisis that we are experiencing, it is a recognition of our Church and of Venezuelan society". Then he added: "It is a responsibility that the Pope gives us to strengthen the work in progress, an appeal to overcome this crisis with constitutional and peaceful means, and leave behind the lack of willingness to talk face to face".
The Archbishop of Mérida stressed that the work for truth and the search for coexistence should be permanent: "The Pope is giving us an example with his gestures and attitudes, his trips have almost always been in marginalized areas of the world, to attract attention, and to be aware that problems are not solved with violence".
He concluded: "I remind you that it is not a personal award, it is to let everyone see the need to work for the understanding among all Venezuelans, overcoming all kinds of violence is the only way that will allow us a future of peace and harmony among all Venezuelans".
