Mexico City (Agenzia Fides) - Marriage and early pregnancy are the main obstacles affecting the development of minors. The United Nations report that in Mexico there are over 19 million children and adolescents who make up 16.2% of the entire population of the Country. On the occasion of International Day of the Girl Child, which is celebrated today, October 11, the UN has chosen the theme 'Girls' Progress = Goals' Progress: What Counts for Girls', and launched a warning about the fact that early marriage and early school drop out are the main obstacles to their development. In 2013, the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) of Mexico had reported that 4.5 million girls had said that they were adults. At the same time, according to a 2015 survey, the total number of adolescents between
12 and 17, more than six million, had children. The highest percentage is recorded in places with less than 2,500 inhabitants. At a national level more than two million children and adolescents between 3 to 17 years of age do not attend school. Estimates of Child Labour Module (MTI) 2015 show that, in Mexico, 2 and a half million children between 5 and 17 are engaged in some economic activity. Of these, 27.5% are women. One of the main consequences of child labor is school drop out. 33.9% do not attend school due to lack of interest, aptitude or requirements to enter school; 21.9% work and 19.2% due to a lack of economic resources. In addition, six out of 10 work, study and do housework; 5.0% work and study; 30.6% work and do housework; seven thousand girls and adolescents just work. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 11/10/2016)
