Sao Paulo (Agenzia Fides) - "Guarantee of fundamental rights" is the theme of the Forum, to be held on October 29 in Sao Paulo, indicated by the coordination group of the Forum of Social Pastoral Councils of the South Region 1 of the Brazilian Bishops' Conference (CNBB). This is how the group welcomed the proposal of the Commission of the Pastoral Health Care of the Archdiocese of Sao Paulo, due to the seriousness of the moment, which threatens the social achievements through the 241 Law Proposal, under discussion at the National Congress.
This proposal should suspend spending on health and education for 20 years, with consequences for private workers but especially for civil service. If the law is approved, the reform of the social security system which started years ago would be completed, and would result in the blocking of employment, in addition to blocking the increase of civil servants’ salaries. With the current monthly inflation that exceeds 8.5%, suspending costs, wages and pensions would mean impoverishing the entire Brazilian society.
The Forum, according to information sent to Fides, has chosen this theme because it is the most urgent to be treated according to the 26 dioceses of South Region 1, that have already confirmed their participation. Bishops His Exc. Mgr. João Inácio Müller, Bishop of Lorena, Forum Coordinator and His Exc. Mgr. Leonardo Steiner, Auxiliary Bishop of Brasilia, Secretary General of the CNBB, have offered to follow the participants personally.
Meanwhile, at the end of September the main social sectors of the country went on strike and demonstrated: transport, education, health workers and the major trade unions. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 05/10/2016)
