Manado (Agenzia Fides) - The second Indonesian Youth Day, a national event organized by the Episcopal Conference, on the model of World Youth Day, began today October 4, in the diocese of Manado, eastern Indonesia (North Sulawesi). More than 2,600 young people from 37 dioceses of the archipelago have gathered until 6 October to pray, reflect, meet on the theme "The joy of the Gospel in a plural society".
As reported to Fides by the local Church, it is an event in full harmony with the "Jubilee of Mercy" and will constitute a kind of preparation for the Asian Youth Day, to be held in Yogyakarta, also in Indonesia, from 30 July to 6 in August 2017.
Indonesian Youth Day focuses on the theme of "unity in diversity" and "conviviality" of differences, as pointed out by the Bishop of Manado, His Exc. Mgr. Joseph Suwatan, noting that "young people are an example for the peaceful coexistence between peoples and religions". One of the topics on the agenda will be in fact mutual understanding, cooperation and solidarity with the followers of other faiths, especially Islam, to work together for the common good of the nation.
Young people are engaged in seminars, catechesis, prayers, pilgrimages, theatrical and dance performances, to express the rich cultural diversity of the Indonesian archipelago and acknowledge their desire to build a peaceful and harmonious society. (PA) (Agenzia Fides 04/10/2016)
