Pointe-Noire (Agenzia Fides) - In Pointe-Noire, the second largest city in the Republic of Congo, about 500 kilometers from the capital Brazzaville, it is estimated there are at least 7,000 disabled children out of a population of about 800,000 inhabitants. A note sent to Agenzia Fides says that these people are almost all completely excluded from the labor market and forced to depend on the support of family and friends. Thanks to a three-year project for the training and integration of young people with disabilities in the working world, through the creation of cooperatives, 177 children with disabilities of Pointe-Noire had the opportunity of becoming tailors, carpenters, upholsterers, hairdressers, pastry chefs or blacksmiths. The project carried out by AVSI, with European Union funding, aimed at improving the socio-economic situation of people with disabilities who are accompanied throughout their journey towards economic independence.
