Miao (Agenzia Fides) - The Diocese of Miao, in the state of Arunachal Pradesh in northeastern India, opened the first hospital dedicated to Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta. The ceremony took place on September 8, 2016. The small 25-bed hospital was under construction for four years and "is a blessing for the inhabitants of the district: the area was in dire need of a hospital", said the civil officials present at the inauguration.
The Bishop of Miao, Salesian George Pallipparambil, explained the reason why the hospital was dedicated to Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta: "This institute wants to highlight that Mother Teresa and mercy go hand in hand. We are very proud to say that Mother Teresa visited our diocese. After many difficulties, she visited Arunachal Pradesh in 1993. The diocese of Miao intends to join in the celebration of the canonization of Mother Teresa, honoring her with this hospital".
Thanks to the hospital, the tribals living in the territory of Arunachal Pradesh, will not have to travel over 100 km to reach the neighboring state of Assam when they need medical care. Although some parts of the hospital is yet to be completed, the institute opens with a basic structure for the treatment of diseases such as tuberculosis, malaria and jaundice, which are common in this part of north-eastern India and which, although curable, are still the cause of death among the tribal.
