ASIA/TURKEY - One child out of 200 worldwide is a refugee

Ankara (Agenzia Fides) - There are currently 50 million children and displaced persons worldwide who have fled their families. Among these 28 million have fled for fear of violence and war. Between 2005 and 2015 the number of these young victims doubled and that of migrant children has increased by 21%. The last UNICEF report sent to Agenzia Fides, indicated that 70% of all refugee children have applied for asylum in Europe to escape the war, mainly in Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and Yemen. Turkey ranks first among the ten countries that are home to the largest number of refugees in the world, although in Lebanon there has been a refugee for every 5 inhabitants. In 2015 children travelling alone tripled compared to 2014. Traveling alone means they are at risk of exploitation, abuse, trafficking. One migrant out of three arrive from Africa are under 18 years.
