Salamanca (Agenzia Fides) - The Master General of the Order of Preachers (OP), Fr. Bruno Cadoré opened yesterday afternoon the "Dominicans conference in the promotion and defense of human rights: past, present and future".
The meeting held in Salamanca until September 5, gathers more than 200 members of the Dominican Family worldwide. The site chosen is the St. Stephen the Martyr, where Francisco de Vitoria, Antonio de Montesinos with their community and Bartolomé de las Casas, among others, were committed to the human rights of indigenous peoples of Latin America in the XVI century.
The strong link between studies and the mission is at the heart of the Dominican charism, this is why the last General Chapters of the Order called for a renewed synergy between intellectual life and apostolic life. This Congress is one of the main celebrations of the eighth centenary of the Dominicans, and is an integral part of the so-called "Salamanca Process" which brings together the leaders of intellectual institutions and the members of the Dominican Family who are at the forefront in defending human rights.
