ASIA/TURKEY - Greece calls for Ankara to offer an apology for the "Greek-Pontic Genocide"

Athens (Agenzia Fides) - The Greek people "will continue their battle until Turkey recognizes the Pontic genocide and offers a sincere apology for the crimes committed by their ancestors". This is what in recent days the President of the Hellenic Republic, Prokopis Paulopoulos said, in some statements released in Turkey by the Armenian-Turkish bilingual newspaper Agos. In addition to the demand for an apology for the so-called "Pontic Genocide" the Greek President added the protest against the Turkish government because Ankara does not allow Christians to pray in the Sumela Monastery, built on a cliff in the valley of Altindere,1200 meters above sea level, in the Macka region, in the northern Trabzon province.
The term "Pontic Genocide" indicates the eradication of the Greeks from remaining lands under the Turkish domination, which took place during the same period of the Armenian Genocide. The Pontic Greeks were the original Greek population of the Pontiac region, which extended in the northeast up to Asia Minor, including the current Turkish provinces of Samsun, Amasya, Tokat, Ordu, Giresum, Gumushane, Trabzon, Rize and Artvin, on the Black Sea coast.
