Ercilla (Agenzia Fides) - A group of unidentified people attacked and burned a Catholic church in Pidima (Araucania, Chile), in the early hours of August 4 in the town of Ercilla. The church was completely destroyed, although the fire brigade did their best to put out the fire.
Writings in favor of the Mapuche cause were found on the spot, as in similar cases that are repeated recently in different parts of the region. In this case however the writings reject dialogue promoted by the authorities.
More than a dozen churches and chapels were set on fire during the early months of 2016, and on site messages were always found related to the serious problems of the Mapuche, unsolved for more than a century (see Fides 19/12/2015; 09/03/2016; 05/04/2016; 13/04/2016). The burning of churches is, however, incomprehensible (see Fides 22/04/2016). (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 05/08/2016)
