Nairobi (Agenzia Fides) - Are there persons inciting Kenyan school pupils to burn schools? This is the concern expressed by Bishop Maurice Muhatia Makumba, Bishop of Nakuru and Chairman of the Kenyan Conference of Catholic Bishops KCCB Commission for Education and Religious Education .
“We should find a mechanism to isolate perpetrators and avoid communal consequences by the actions of a few elements” Bishop Muhatia said underling that the burning of the schools is perpetrated by a few pupils only and the great majority of children are innocent.
According to the Bishop the main cause behind the torching is not implementation of new rules by the cabinet secretary to deal with indiscipline and criminal activities at the school level, but rather a “third hand” which would to be inciting a few students to burn and destroy school facilities.
Bishop Muhatia appealed to all Kenyans to reflect on the moral direction of the nation and join hands in bringing up a young generation that respects and understands the importance of the common good .
Fides has been informed that in Kenya in the last two months there have been fires in as many as 30 dormitories in 20 schools, mainly in the western part of the country . (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 1/8/2016)
