Thursday, 3 November 2005

Sydney (Fides Service) - A study seminar to mark the 40th anniversary of the closing of the Second Vatican Council has been organised by the Sydney Catholic Institute, a study centre for theological formation and elaboration. The seminar, ‘Vatican II Today and Tomorrow’ will be held in three sessions, 2, 9 and 16 November, on the following themes: ‘Mission and morality’; ‘The Spirit of the Laity’; ‘Word of God and Faith Life’.
Yesterday, 2 November the first conferences focussed on ‘Mission: Mother of the Church and of theology’, ‘Morality and Ethics for a new world’, recalling that the Council opened to way for a new theological approach to questions of moral life.
On 9 November, 2 conferences will reflect on ‘A new age of holiness; Tensions Opportunities in the emerging role of the laity’.
The seminar will close with the 16 November session. Participants, clergy, religious and laity, will reflect on the theme ‘A Symphony of Voices’ on different interpretations of Sacred Scripture and ‘the Bible in History’, illustrating a new method of historic-critical interpretation applied to Sacred Scripture, since Vatican II.
The three days will include discussion on how Vatican II indications have been understood and actuated in Catholic pastoral activity in Australia; the challenge of spreading secularism and the need for greater involvement of the laity in evangelisation.
