AFRICA/EGYPT – The Coptic Church rejects foreign exploitation of sectarian attacks experienced

Cairo (Agenzia Fides) – The Copt Orthodox Church does not want the sectarian attacks recently experienced by Egyptian Christians to become a pretext for exploitation and warns against any organisation abroad of public mobilisations and campaigns, which sound like attempts to “interfere” in Egyptian domestic vicissitudes on the part of organisations or groups. Fides learned this from sources close to the Coptic Church.
The new series of violence against Copt Christians, registered particularly in the territory of Minya, provoked firm public interventions on the part of Copt Patriarch Tawadros II, the Grande Imam of al Azhar Ahmad al Tayyib and also Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al Sisi (see Fides 21, 22 and 25/7/2016). As a political effect of this joint reaction, the presentation has been announced of a bill of law to pursue attacks of a sectarian nature committed against national unity.
