AMERICA/COLOMBIA - Wayuú children continue to die of hunger and thirst
La Guajira (Agenzia Fides) – The Wayúu indigenous communities in Colombia report that more children are dying of hunger, undernourishment and lack of social care in La Guajira. For several months a humanitarian crisis has threatened the life of thousands living in this part of the country (see Fides 8/2/2016). What is more despite the serious situation, attempts to deviate water supplies to favour the extraction of coal continue.
Representatives of the Wayuú people say that since the beginning of 2016 at least 40 children have died and that some were not even registered by the authorities . The Colombian Welfare Institute (ICBF) would seem unable to prevent children in La Guajira from dying of hunger.
