Beirut (Agenzia Fides) - The Lebanese military prosecutor, Fadi Sawan, on Wednesday, July 20 issued an arrest warrant against three Syrians suspected of having participated in the kidnapping of the Sisters of the Syrian monastery of St. Tekla, in the village of Maalula. Saer e Aman Skaf and Mustafa Ezzedin, have already been arrested as defendants for arms trafficking and involvement in terrorist actions.
The story of the thirteen Greek Orthodox nuns of the monastery of Santa Tekla had for months captured the attention of international media, starting in December 2013 (see Fides 05/12/2013). The sisters were kidnapped from their monastery on December 2, together with three collaborators, by militiamen of one of the anti-Assad factions who had conquered the town, inhabited mostly by Christians, and known throughout the world for being one of the places where they still speak Aramaic, Jesus’ language. The release of the kidnapped occurred on March 9, 2014 in the Lebanese town of northeastern Arsal, thanks to the mediation of the Lebanese intelligence apparatus and Qatar, and in exchange 153 women detained in Syrian prisons were also released.
