Austin (Agenzia Fides) - According to experts, poverty is a major factor for the increase in cases of child abuse that continue to be registered in Travis County, Texas. Doctors at the Dell Children's Medical Center said that every day they see an increase in the number of child victims of abuse. A group of researchers of this pediatric hospital, together with Ascension Health Centre, have come together to identify the areas with the largest number of victims and, at the same time, seek solutions or prevent the phenomenon. According to the Child Protective Center data (CPR), between 2009 and 2012, after the economic downturn, there was an increase of victims among children.
Because of the development of the city and the rise in house prices, the population in the most precarious economic situation moved to the outskirts of the Trevis County, in areas where there are no services for the population in addition to a high rate of unemployment. In order for a change to take place, say local sources, the Community infrastructure must be strengthened for families, such as affordable housing, decent wages, easy access to health services, efficient public transport and, above all, the quality of schools have to be improved. According to statistics of 2012, one out of 100 children suffered abuse in the United States; while in Travis County, in the same year, the figure was 1 out of 85. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 21/07/2016)
