AFRICA/KENYA - Bro Argese, "water missionary", publicly thanked the Diocese of Meru

Nairobi (Agenzia Fides) - "We thank the Consolata missionaries for giving us Bro Argese to work in Meru for all these years. They gave us education, water, hospitals and they put up the diocese and supported us so that today we are able to stand on our own feet", said His Exc. Mgr. Salesius Mugambi, Bishop of Meru, Kenya, during his homily at Mass to mark the annual Meru Diocese Water Day celebrations at the Tuuru Water Supply offices in Laare town.
It was an opportunity to thank Bro Joseph Argese, Consolata missionary (IMC), who for decades projects and supervises the construction not only of churches, including the Cathedral of Meru, but above all the aqueducts and other water works, which provide drinking water to half a million people in Meru and Tharaka Nithi counties.
"The people of Meru will forever be grateful to Bro Argese for the human formation he has imparted on them. Our major universities need to take keen interest in what has been done in Mukululu for our prosperity", said Fr. Andrew Mbiko, the chairman of management for the Tuuru Water supply. "We are kindly drawing the attention of the entire Country and especially the Kenya government to the special unique contribution this single missionary has made towards the human formation, development and civilization of the Meru people", added Fr. Mbiko, who recalled that he had asked the government to grant honorary citizenship to the Italian missionary.
Bro Giuseppe Argese was born in Martina Franca, in Puglia, in 1932. In 1957 he went to Kenya as a missionary and since then has been engaged in the construction of churches and public utility works. In 1959 he started his major activity: planning and construction of numerous hydraulic engineering works concerning the collection and distribution of water, water that is now being distributed to hundreds of thousands of people. The importance and quality of work done in 50 years by Bro Argese has been recognized by the highest world institutions. On 15 June 1999 Bro Argese was awarded the prestigious Path to Peace, at the Headquarters of the United Nations in New York, one of the highest awards for the contribution to the development of peace at an international level.
